In-Person Auditions
Join us for the live audition circuit at FDHS Main Campus. Candidates will be evaluated on technique, freestyle capacity, and team synchronicity. Main Campus students please arrive 5-10 minutes early for check-in. Ninth grade students should arrive by 4:15PM. Eighth grade students may choose to only submit virtually & wait for summer practices. However, we encourage those that can attend in person to arrive by 5:00PM.

All candidates for the Astro Auxiliary & Winter Dance Teams must provide complete contact details, performance history, and links to virtual audition videos (including interview response questions). Your virtual application is the first step toward joining our elite program. See below for detailed instructions on submitting audition videos.

Winter Competitive Dance Team Virtual Submission
Candidates for the Winter Competitive Dance Season (October-March) will submit digitally and be invited to in-person summer training.
Ensure high-quality lighting and clear visibility of the full body in video submissions. Those who made the Northstarette Dance Team are automatic members of the Douglass Celestial Dance Company & must report for in-person summer training dates.

How do dance company auditions work?
In order to audition for the Douglass Celestial Dance Company, the student must have all of the following:
- Be a current student at Frederick Douglass High School for the 2026 - 2027 academic year
- Currently have a 70 or higher in all classes
- No major discipline infractions within the current school year (OSS)
- Completed Application (Google Form with 1-minute solo submission)
-Be invited to in-person summer training for final audition
Virtual Submissions & Summer Training Attendance
You must submit virtually to be invited to in-person summer training. Attendance at in-person summer training on June 2nd will be mandatory to complete the audition for Dance Company. If there is a conflict (i.e., summer school, internship, out of town, etc.), Ms. Mathis should know in advance to be able to accommodate you. Attendance and communication will factor into whether you are selected as a member. We will meet in the Fine Arts building. We willl begin PROMPTLY at 9:30AM to allow time to learn technical skills and two short combinations (hip-hop and jazz) that you will perform from 11:00AM-12:00PM as your final tryout. A brief meeting will be held from 12:15PM-12:30PM for those selected to become dance company members.
Expected Attire (video submission and in-person)
- Black Bottoms (Knee-length or longer; any shorter bottoms must be worn with dance tights)
- Black Tops (full-length; no crop tops)
-Tennis Shoes (NO slides/crocs)
- NO JEWELRY
- NO bags/phones/extra items in hands or on body while dancing
- Makeup is NOT required but encouraged

You are encouraged to sign-up for the Free APS Power Up Fine Arts Summer Camp (June 8-19th) for two full weeks of dance training & field trips to work on technique that will be studied in Dance Company rehearsals. The camp is 8:30-3:30PM daily. Meals and transportation are provided (see flyer below).
2026-27 Astro Dance & Auxiliary Team Audition Tutorials
Master the required choreography for the Astro Fall Auxiliary & Winter Dance Team auditions. These tutorial videos are designed to help you prepare for both virtual submissions and in-person evaluations. Fall Auxiliary Team tutorials are no longer accessible. Winter Dance Team tutorials will be available only to those invited for in-person summer training.
Auxiliary Stands & Field Show Choreography
Jazz & Technical Skills
Competitive Pom & Hip-Hop Routines
Prepare for precision and synchronization in the stands and on the field. This tutorial includes 6 stands that should be submitted via video for all sections: dance, flag, & baton. Those interested in dance line must also learn the field show dance routine. Field shows for flag & baton will be taught in-person.

When are the 2026-27 audition dates?
Astro Auxiliary auditions already took place March 17-19. There will not be any additional tryouts for current 9-11th grade.
Dance company auditions will be held in two stages: Video submissions will be required with the Google Form application until April 22nd.

Ms. Mathis will contact you directly to invite you to the in-person summer training on June 2nd. The final audition will take place during this training session.
Dancers must wear form-fitting black dance wear with appropriate footwear (jazz shoes or athletic sneakers - no bare feet). Hair must be secured away from the face. Detailed grooming guidelines are in the candidate application.
What is the required audition attire?
How do I access the tutorial videos?
Official dance combinations and technique tutorials for Auxiliary are posted on our YouTube channel. Access links are posted above on this site & sent to the email provided during the tryout process once you have submitted. (No longer accessible - tryouts have concluded).
For dance company tryouts, only those invited to summer training will receive access to the routine videos in preparation for the in-person audition during summer training on June 2nd.
Is there a fee to audition for the team?
There is no fee to audition for either team.
What technique is evaluated?
Dancers are judged on jazz and hip-hop technique, flexibility, performance, and special skills (not required but will be considered).
Auxiliary candidates (flags and batons) are also judged on coordination, pattern clarity, and group synchronization. All flag & baton routines will be taught in-person.
